⚠ A word of warning: there are a lot of other websites where you can purchase an e-Visa for Turkey. While, in general, these websites and the issued visas are legit, you will be paying a lot more for the same visa. Those websites are intermediates, who will charge you at least double the price of the normal visa cost just for processing the application on your behalf. Trust us; the official website is very straightforward and easy to use, especially if you follow the steps provided in this step-by-step guide to get your visa for Turkey.

How to find out if you need a visa for Turkey or not?

Now that you’re on the right website, you can work your way through the 15 things that you need to know before creating an application, or you can immediately start a new application. If you’re following the steps in this post, you’ll notice we will cover all 15 things at one point or another.

1. Are you eligible for an e-Visa?

To find out, click on the Apply Now button in the top left corner of the page. You’ll be directed to the New Application screen, where you will need to fill in some details. Don’t worry; nothing is set in stone until right at the end, so you won’t be punished when clicking Save and Continue and changing your mind afterward. 🙂

The first screen will ask you for the following details:

  • Country/Region: Select Country/Region of Your Travel Document. Now, this is important, as plenty of travelers seem to think they need to select Turkey here. You don’t. You’re applying for a visa for Turkey; the system already knows that this is where you’re going. Select your country of origin, the one where your passport or travel document was issued. (for example ‘United Kingdom’)
  • Travel Document: There are several options. The most common ones are undoubtedly ‘Ordinary Passport’ or ‘Identity Card’.

After that, you have to enter a security verification (or Captcha) and click on Save and Continue to go to the next page to find out if you’re eligible.

2. Duration of stay – Eligible – Exempt – Visa cost?

The second screen of your Turkish visa application is the answer to the question: do you need a visa for Turkey or not. If you do, are you eligible for a Turkish e-Visa, or do you need to go to the nearest Turkish mission to complete an application? If you are eligible for an e-Visa, you will also find out the price of your visa on this page, and how long you are allowed to stay in the country. (usually 30 or 90 days). Below, you’ll see an example for all scenarios applicable to page two of your online visa application.

As you can see, the price for an e-Visa varies depending on your country of origin. Of course, we could publish a full list of Turkish visa costs or the maximum duration of stay for each nationality, but things change, and we always want to provide you with up-to-date information. That is why we are directing you towards a source that is official and always current.

3. Date of Arrival – When to apply?

Also, on the second page of your application, you need to fill in your ‘Arrival Date in Turkey’. Typically, this coincides with your flight or other transportation booked. Still, we would advise you to take a margin of error here and pick an earlier date. The reason is that once you have completed your application, you cannot alter the dates anymore.

You do not need to enter Turkey on the exact date specified in your application. You can enter the country on any date within the validity period of your visa. BUT, the validity date of your e-Visa begins from the date you enter in this field. As a result, if your flight dates change to an earlier date, you will need to apply and pay for a new visa. If you arrive later than the date mentioned in your application, you’re safe, as long as your arrival remains within the validity dates specified on the screen.

Your arrival date has to be within three months from the date you are applying for your e-Visa. There’s no need to get nervous, though; the system won’t let you select an arrival date beyond these three months. Other than that, you can apply for your visa any time before your arrival. Still, it is advised to complete your application at least 48 hours before your departure.

Don’t forget, foreigners wishing to enter Turkey must carry a passport or a travel document with an expiration date at least 60 days beyond the “duration of stay” of their visa. To avoid issues, you are advised to have a travel document or passport valid for at least six months from the date of your arrival in Turkey.

Is it a close call? Then use our calculator to determine whether you need to apply for a new passport or not. Just enter your date of entry and add 60 to the number mentioned in the sentence “Your stay cannot exceed X days.” For example, if it says your stay cannot exceed 90 days, the number you need to fill in is 150.

4. Special requirements

For some nationalities, special requirements apply before they can get a visa for Turkey. If this is the case, you will see an overview of the prerequisites applicable to your case after you have clicked ‘Save and Continue’ on the ‘Date of Arrival’ page. You will need to check all the boxes to confirm that you meet all the criteria. Below is an example of possible prerequisites for a Turkish e-Visa.

5. Personal data

Next, it is time to provide your personal data. Watch out, as there is NO ROOM FOR ERROR. Honestly, one typo is enough to make your e-Visa invalid, so we can’t stress this enough: check everything thoroughly before you hit ‘Save and Continue’! The data that you provide here must exactly match what is written on your passport or travel document. These are the fields that you’ll need to fill in:

  • Given/First Name(s): Type your name in the box, as shown in your passport. If you have a middle/second name, type all the names right after your first name, with a space in between.
  • Surname(s): Enter your last name, as in your passport. If your surname is not specified on your travel document, you can leave it blank.
  • Date of Birth
  • Place of Birth
  • Mother’s Name: OPTIONAL
  • Father’s Name: OPTIONAL
  • Passport Number
  • Passport Issue Date
  • Passport Expiry Date
  • E-mail address
  • Phone Number
  • Address

Once you have filled in all details and checked them thoroughly (beware of the autocorrect monster!), you can either choose to ‘Save and Continue’, or you can ‘Add a New Person’. This is convenient when you’re traveling with a family. This function allows you to apply for an e-Visa for all family members at once. It is essential to know that everyone who is traveling with you, needs to have an e-Visa upon arrival in Turkey, that includes children. You can make a family application for up to 10 people as long as all members fulfill the following criteria:

  • All members of the family must originate from the same country
  • All travel documents must be the same type (e.g., normal passport, official, diplomatic)
  • The selected arrival date (second step of your application) must be the same: Still, once the e-Visa is issued, you are not required to enter Turkey on the same date. You can enter the country on any date within the validity period of your visa. In other words, family members are not required to travel together.
  • All in the family must meet all prerequisites (if any) for e-Visa application

In any case, either you are only applying for yourself, in which case you can click on ‘Save and Continue’ after you have filled in your personal details, or you’re proceeding with a family application. In this case, you need to click on ‘Add a New Person’. Whichever button you click, you will always be redirected to the verification screen first. This gives you one last chance to make sure that there are no mistakes in your personal details. Have you spotted an error? Hit ‘Edit’ and correct it. Is everything correct? Click ‘Verify’.

The next step depends on whether you’ve clicked on ‘Add a New Person’ in the previous step or not. If you have, you will have to repeat the same process until all applicants are processed. If not, then your e-Visa application is now submitted, and you should receive an e-mail shortly with direction for payment for your visa for Turkey.

6. Turkish visa cost & Payment

As mentioned previously, the price of a visa for Turkey varies depending on your nationality. The price per person is mentioned in step two of your online application, as you can see in the screenshots featured in this post. When you receive the e-mail from the visa application system, all you need to do is click on ‘Approve’ to be directed to the payment screen. If you haven’t received an e-mail right away, check your SPAM folder! TIP: whitelist the sender to avoid subsequent e-mails ending up in the junk folder as well.

IMPORTANT! You need to do this within 48 hours of receiving the e-mail, or your visa application will time out. If this is the case, the system will automatically decline your payment, and you’ll have to start over.

You will notice that the amount to pay is in USD, no matter what your country of origin is. Also, a small service fee is added to the initial price of your e-Visa to cover the cost of the international money transaction.

7. Download & print your visa for Turkey

Upon approval of your payment, you can download your visa immediately by clicking the ‘Download your e-Visa’ button at the bottom of the screen. You can also request an invoice after you’ve downloaded your visa from the same screen. You will also receive an e-mail with a link to download your visa for Turkey. We advise you to keep this e-mail as it allows you to reprint your visa if it gets lost before you travel, or if you’re traveling more than once within the allowed period on a multi-entry visa.

Do you need to print your visa for Turkey? The topic is food for debate in numerous Facebook groups. The reality is that some airlines require you to carry a printed copy of your visa. Also, while passport control officers at the ports of entry can verify your e-Visa in the system, you’re on your own in case of system failure. In Turkey, by law, you must carry your passport and a copy of your visa at all times. Authorities do accept a softcopy (on your smartphone, e.g.) as well. Still, this doesn’t help if you’re refused to board your plane by lack of a printed e-Visa.

What would we do? Print the e-Visa and carry it with you during your inbound trip. Once in the country, rely on a softcopy on your phone or tablet.
