Toparlar waterfall: a 15-minute walk to paradise

Does Toparlar waterfall qualify as a hidden gem? If hidden gem means that it isn’t flooded with tourists yet, then probably yes. Technically, it’s not hidden, as it is well waymarked, but it is a gem! If you hadn’t heard of it yet, keep reading. We’ll explain exactly how to get there, and more importantly when to visit to avoid the crowds.

Several hiking routes take you there, but if you’re after a short and relatively lazy hike, you’ll reach this little slice of paradise in about 15 minutes.

Hiking the ECO Trails with Toparlar falls as a bonus

Toparlar waterfall lies, as the name suggests, in Toparlar, near Köyceğiz. Köyceğiz, one of Turkey’s Cittaslow cities, enjoys a relatively untouched setting as part of the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area. The town is also home to the ECO Trails, a network of hiking and cycling trails filling up the gap between the Lycian Way and the Carian Trail. The ECO Trails are categorized into three sections: the coastal routes, a northern mountain section, and the middle part in between.

The well-waymarked routes offer spectacular views of beaches, forests, lakes, and wetlands, including Iztuzu beach and the Dalyan Delta. You’ll recognize the trail from the red-white markings and yellow direction signs for hikers or red ones for cyclists at several intersections.

Both the northern mountain section and the middle section offer hiking routes to Toparlar waterfalls. The route in the middle section is called Toparlar – Frankincense route. It connects Köyceğiz’ promenade with the Toparlar waterfalls and is classified as ‘easy’. You’re in for a little less than 10km walk or 3h30 of leisurely walking. You can find the detailed route here.

If you prefer a slightly more challenging hike, consider the Döğüşbelen – Toparlar waterfall – Yeşilköy route in the northern section. This trail of intermediate difficulty is just over 19km long and takes about 6h30 to complete. Of course, you could easily choose to make the Toparlar waterfall your endpoint. This page contains a detailed map of the hike.

If you’re not really into hiking, or if you only want to go for a swim, you’ll find the quick and easy way to reach Toparlar waterfall below.

The quick and easy way to reach Toparlar waterfall

You can’t dive into the Toparlar waterfall pool without a short walk. There’s no parking lot right next to it! (luckily!) The nearest spot to park your car is just off the main D400 road connecting Muğla to Fethiye. If you’re coming from the direction of Köyceğiz, drive past Toparlar and then look out for the sign that points to the Toparlar waterfall on your right-hand side.

Take the dirt road until you reach the end and park under the trees. From there, you’ll spot the signs and ECO Trail marks to the waterfall. It takes about 15 minutes to make your way up to the waterfall along a scenic path. Once you leave the ‘parking lot’ behind, it is hard to believe that the main road is so nearby. You instantly are in another world.

Make sure to look out for the markings and not to miss any. You will have to cross the stream on two different occasions. Not a major issue, but this walk, while short, is not suitable for people with mobility issues. Alternatively, you could make turn this into a light version of canyoning and keep following the stream below instead of the land trails. If you do, make sure to wear appropriate footwear, as the terrain is slippery and rocky.

If you follow the path in the woods, you’ll arrive at the Toparlar waterfall some 200m after the direction sign to Döğüşbelen. The descent to the pool is a bit tricky but doable. Once at pool level, enjoy the beauty of the waterfall and take a dive into the pool, or awaken your inner Tarzan or Jane and take a swing using the rope.

Also, don’t forget to check out the waterfall adjacent to the parking lot. You can hear the water falling as soon as you arrive. And, if we’re honest, we were captivated by it. You can’t swim there, but it offers such a beautiful scene! Don’t miss it!

The best time to visit Toparlar waterfall

Diving into that pool probably is the most rewarding during high summer, but unfortunately, that is also the time when jeep safaris visit this spot. Still, you can beat the crowds by being an early bird and making sure you’re at the waterfall early morning. If you can, come to this place out of season, and preferably not during the weekend. That’s when you have the biggest shot at having this little garden of Eden all to yourselves.

Remember, this is not a place you should visit if you’re having mobility issues. Also, there are no facilities, you’re in nature. Come prepared and bring plenty of water, you’re swimming gear and towels, and something to protect you from the sun.

Please respect this natural environment. The rocks are not ashtrays!
