Will Republic Day in Turkey affect your travels?

October 29th is a day filled with speeches, performances, and festivities all over Turkey. Plenty of people take the opportunity to pay a visit to Anıtkabir in Ankara. Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He was the first President and the founder of the Republic of Turkey and the leader of the Turkish War of Independence. His memory is still very much alive, and you will see his portrait all over Turkey, including on people’s cars.

This is a public holiday, meaning you’ll find businesses, schools, and administration buildings are closed. Republic Day in Turkey often ends with concerts and fireworks. For many resorts, the season has ended by the end of October. In places like Istanbul, however, where people visit all year, you might notice this is a very special day for the Turkish people. If you are staying in one of the bigger cities on that day, check out if they are organizing a torchlight procession. They are a powerful thing to watch.
