May Day in Turkey, May 1st: Labor and Solidarity Day

May Day in Turkey looks pretty much like Labor Day in most other places where it is celebrated. Labor and Solidarity Day in Turkey is the opportunity for workers to demand better conditions. Some people are engaged and take action, others just enjoy the day off and don’t think about it.

Will May Day in Turkey affect your holiday?

May Day in Turkey is a public holiday. This means government administrations, post offices and schools are closed, but other businesses are open. In most tourist resorts, you won’t notice this is an official holiday. However, if you’re visiting bigger cities such as Istanbul or Ankara on that day, you may encounter political demonstrations and street protests. As with all protests, it is best to avoid these areas, to avoid getting caught up in the heat. Usually, the police are present, trying to disperse the crowds. Often, the demonstrations are not allowed, therefore it is better not to go near them.
