Where is IGA Airport or Istanbul Airport?

The new Istanbul Airport is about 40km or about an hours’ drive from Taksim Square. IGA Airport lies in the Arnavutköy district, which is in the northwest of the city. You can see the exact location of the airport on the map below this post. The IATA code for the airport is IST, a code it inherited from Atatürk Aiport which will be using ISL from now on. Upon completion, the new Istanbul Aiport will be the largest in the world.

How to get to Istanbul Airport by car?

Located almost on the D020 national road, and close to the north Marmara highway and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, Istanbul Airport is easily accessible by car. Note that the Marmara Region has the busiest traffic in Turkey, so it is better to check the traffic before you leave. On the Istanbul Airport website, you’ll find maps of 10 different routes that will take you to the airport. No need to worry about finding a place to park, the car park at Istanbul Airport has a total capacity of 40.000 vehicles and is also providing valet and vehicle maintenance services. Please remember to carry your parking ticket with you, and to pay before you leave the airport terminal and get back to your car. Here are seven noteworthy facts about IGA Airport car park:

What about public transport between IGA Airport and the city center? Or How to get from Istanbul Airport to Taksim or Sultanahmet?

Currently, you have two options when using public transport to get to and from Istanbul Airport. You can use IETT buses (lines H2, H3 & H4) or HAVAIST shuttles (lines IST1, IST2, IST3, IST7 & IST19).

If you are going to use public transport, please note that HAVAIST shuttles and most other public transport lines in Istanbul only accept the Istanbul Kart as a way of payment.
So, before you head to the bus, make sure to find an ATM at the terminal where you can get some Turkish Lira, preferably in small notes (none of the busses accepts foreign currency or credit cards) and buy an Istanbul Kart, which is the most flexible and cheapest way to use public transport in Istanbul. To go from IGA to Taksim, take HAVAIST line IST19 and get off at the terminus. For Sultanahmet, take the HAVAIST line IST1 which ends at Yenikapı. From there you can either walk or take a taxi. In the future, there will also be a metro line which is currently under construction.

How to get from IGA Airport to Sabiha Gökçen Airport?

Apart from using a private transfer or a taxi, you can also reach Sabiha Gökçen Airport from IGA Airport by public transport. There is no direct line, however, making this a time-consuming venture. Either take HAVAIST line IST19 to Emniyetevler and hop on metro line E-3 at Levent Station. You’ll reach Sabiha Gökçen Airport 11 stops later. Count on 2,5 hours to get there. Alternatively, take HAVAIST line IST19 to Abdülhak Hamit Cd. (3 stops), and then hop onto another bus; line SG-2 to Sabiha Gökçen. If you are using a taxi, we would advise you to ask for their fee per kilometer first, and then to agree to a fixed price, thus avoiding sudden detours.

Can you buy an e-visa at Istanbul Airport?

No, your tourist visa to enter Turkey must be bought online before you travel. Please note that there is only one official website for e-visa to Turkey, which is also your cheapest option. Remember to print your e-visa before leaving, as some airlines require proof that you are carrying a visa to allow you to enter the country upon arrival.

Are the international terminal and the domestic terminal in a separate building? How long does it take to go from one to the other?

While both terminals are under the same roof, it is still quite a walk from one terminal to the next. Count at least two hours, preferably more in between flights. The following video will show you how to get from the international terminal to domestic. For the other way around, click here.

What about FastTrack at Istanbul Airport?

FastTrack check-in is available through IGAPass. This service allows you to make your way from one terminal to the other quickly and is available both in the domestic and the international terminal. IGAPass membership comes with a price tag though. Discover all options on their website, where you can also purchase your package online.

Is there Wi-Fi available at Istanbul Airport?

Turkey is a perfectly safe country to travel, except for these risks. Still, you should never travel without proper insurance. We love World Nomads’ travel insurance. We love their philosophy and their take on responsible travel, but also the fact that they cover popular activities in Turkey such as paragliding or balloon rides.

You must have guessed it already, we’re independent travelers. Joining groups for excursions or activities isn’t really our cup of tea. But we fully understand that not everyone is keen on exploring Turkey on their own. That’s when Get Your Guide comes in handy. They offer plenty of activities and sightseeing tours that you can pre-book online.

If you’re more into a personalized experience while enjoying the services of a guide, Tours by Locals may be what you’re looking for! We just love them! You get the knowledge and assistance of a local, and the experience of independent traveling. Best of both worlds, really.

We still love to use Booking.com when searching for the perfect hotel or vacation rental in Turkey. Unfortunately, the website isn’t accessible from within Turkey without the use of a VPN. If you don’t have a VPN, and you’re already in Turkey, Hotels.com is a good alternative.

When searching for flights, we like to use Skyscanner. It’s easy to use, and reliable. Find the best flights to Turkey and domestic flights that will take you all around the country here.

Do you prefer some good old road tripping? Once you get used to the unconventional driving style in Turkey, you’ll love to hit the road. After all, it’s all about the journey, and you may expect some very scenic rides! Renting a car in Turkey is easy. If you’re looking for an established car rental company that allows pick-up and drop-off at different airports, check out Europcar. They have offices all over Turkey.
