Will Democracy and National Unity Day affect your travels?

Democracy and National Unity Day or Democracy and Freedoms Day is devoted to all who participated in the overthrow of the coup, with memorial services in recognition of soldiers, officers, and civilians who lost their lives during the coup attempt. These memorial services can be quite big in larger cities, but you shouldn’t notice anything out of the ordinary in smaller tourist resorts. However, at 00:13 on July 16, you may hear Salahs – which are Islamic prayer for funerals – chanted simultaneously over loudspeakers of mosques all across Turkey.

During the attempted coup 249 people were martyred and nearly 2,200 people injured. Especially near Martyrs Bridge in Istanbul, you should expect big gatherings, and possibly a presidential visit. These events include heavy security measures. Unless you have a particular interest in participating or witnessing the memorial, our advice would be to avoid that area on July 15th, Democracy and National Unity Day. Democracy and National Unity Day is a public holiday, meaning official institutions, and some businesses are closed, but shops and museums are open as usual.
