Will Democracy and National Unity Day affect your travels?
Democracy and National Unity Day or Democracy and Freedoms Day is devoted to all who participated in the overthrow of the coup, with memorial services in recognition of soldiers, officers, and civilians who lost their lives during the coup attempt. These memorial services can be quite big in larger cities, but you shouldn’t notice anything out of the ordinary in smaller tourist resorts. You may, however, hear that, at 00:13 on July 16, Salahs – which are Islamic prayer for funerals – will be chanted simultaneously over loudspeakers of mosques all across Turkey.
Democracy and National Unity Day is a public holiday, meaning official institutions, and some businesses are closed, but shops and museums are open as usual.
