Babadag: the million $ view that is home to Oludeniz paragliding

For many a Turkey traveler, Oludeniz paragliding is on top of their bucket list. It is estimated that in an average tourist season, about 150.000 people jump off Mount Babadag for a tandem paragliding experience. Apart from the obvious and insane adrenaline boost, jumpers also get treated with out-of-this-world views of one of Turkey’s most beautiful beaches. It is said to be a once in a lifetime experience, but we have it on good authority that plenty of people repeat it if given a chance. 🙂 Babadağ is so much more than a good altitude point for paragliding though. It is a prominent backdrop for Fethiye’s coastline with some fascinating fauna and flora, including protected endemic species that you can discover on your way to the top. In short, even if you skip the jump, a visit to Babadağ’s summit is unquestionably something to consider if you are in the Fethiye area.

A scenic ride

Driving up Mount Babadag certainly qualifies as a dramatic ride! The more faint-hearted call it scary, but we stick to scenic. The road to the top is well waymarked. Halfway, you have the option of visiting the 1.200m point. Though this part of the road is a dirt track, the reward is worth it. While not as high, the views are astonishing, and chances are you’ll have the place all to yourself. We visited Babadag during the Sacrifice Feast Holidays (Kurban Bayramı) in August, which is as busy as any tourist resort gets. While traffic in Ölüdeniz was extremely dense, the serenity on the mountain was a welcome contrast. We were the only people taking in the views and the silence at the 1.200m point. Definitely worth the detour! Some Oludeniz paragliding companies also plan tandem jumps from this point, but usually, the take-off point is at the 1.700m point, where you will also find a café-restaurant. Make sure to stop and admire the unique Lebanon Cedar trees and other endemic plants on Babadağ as you make your way up.

A million Dollar view on Babadag!

We have had to miss the breathtaking view from Babadag for many months. Usually, once winter kicks in, it gets harder to head to the top as the winding and steep roads are covered in snow, or worse, ice. That is why local authorities have decided to build a cable car that will take visitors to the top. While these works will take a few more years to finish, the first stage is done, and the road to the top is open for visitors again; as is the restaurant that has had a serious upgrade! Now we are not a restaurant review blog, and we won’t start reviewing them either. So, this isn’t about the food or the drinks, but about the experience. And quite an experience it is!

Chilling like 007

Confession time: we like it when nature is left untouched. So we admit we were skeptical about the works going on at the top of Mount Babadag. We feared it would ruin things. Well, it didn’t. On the contrary! The view is as stunning as it always was, the paragliders are still floating in the air like colorful balloons, and the old Zirve Restaurant has been knocked down and replaced by a stylish place that would fit right into a James Bond movie or the Thunderbirds; especially if you look at the setting and the cable car running above it. So, by all means, make sure you head to the top and enjoy that million $ view! The restaurant menu is extensive, and prices are comparable to what you would pay for a meal or a drink on the promenade in Ölüdeniz. But trust us, it is not about the food; it’s about how this place makes you feel!

Oludeniz Paragliding: taking things beyond spectacular!

Anyone who has been paragliding, or who considers doing it will agree that it is an awesome thing to do. But paragliding in Ölüdeniz is taking things one step further. The presence of Mount Babadag so close to the see, right above Turkey’s most spectacular beach is a gift. This is not just about the thrill; it is also about experiencing this extraordinary view in a totally unique way. This is what it looks like from above.

How to get to Mount Babadağ

All depends on your intentions. Obviously, if you are going paragliding, the company you book your flight with is going to make sure you are driven to the top. If not, you have the option of a very long walk, take a taxi, drive up to the top yourself, or take advantage of the Sky Dine service from 1700 Babadag Grill & Bar. They offer a pick-up service from your hotel in the area that is included in their sunset dinner package. Until the works at the cable car started, there was a regular minibus (dolmuş) service too. But we spoke to the manager of the restaurant who could not yet confirm how long they would be able to remain open after the season. So keep an eye on their Facebook page for any updates. At one point, the works for the second phase of the cable car will start, and the road may be closed again. In any case, visiting Mount Babadag is worth it at any time of the day. The views are always spectacularly mesmerizing. Remember to take some warm clothing if you are going for a sunset dinner. As soon as the sun has disappeared, it gets cold, even in the midst of August.
