Arpaz Beyler mansion & castle: Ottoman meets Medieval

When visiting Arpaz Beyler mansion, it wasn’t the first time we stood in awe for an Ottoman mansion in need of restoration. The same thing happened in Birgi with the Çakırağa Konağı. Only there, the mansion is closed for renovation for an indefinite period. In the long run, this is without a doubt good news, but if you want to have a look inside now, you’ll end up disappointed. That is currently not the case with Arpaz Beyler konağı, a spectacular Ottoman mansion near Nazilli. There is an agreement in place to start the restoration works so that the situation may change at any given moment.

If you are in the area, perhaps when visiting Nysa, or the pottery workshops in Karacasu, the small detour is well worth the effort!

The history of Arpaz Beyler Mansion

Little is known about the history of the mansion and its tower. Still, most sources seem to agree that the group of buildings was built in the early 19th century by local Ottoman lords on the outskirts of what must have been Harpasa, a Carian city, and a bishopric. These lords, the Arpaz Beyleri owned the extensive farmland which stretched from Esenköy to Akçay, almost 20 km further south.

Other sources, including the people still living on-site, claim that the structures are at least a few hundred years older, and that remains from the earlier Ottoman Period were found, suggesting that the current buildings are restored versions of previous constructions. The estate included a mansion, guesthouses, fountains and baths, stables, a watchtower and storehouses, and outbuildings.

The Arpaz Tower, in its current version, was built by Arpazlı Hacı Hasan Bey II during the Mahmud II era. He brought craftsman back from Rhodes, who built the tower house after the medieval Naillac Tower, which has now been destroyed. It had a drawbridge for protection and was directly connected to the mansion where the family lived.

According to the ‘Visit Aydın’ website, the Arpaz Beyler mansion was built as an exact copy of Sultan Murat Hüdavendigâr’s house in Bursa. It features exquisitely carved woodwork and elegant floral motifs, and the typical architectural elements of Ottoman houses with open-air seating areas. Many of these elements, while in need of restoration, are still well-preserved today. We were particularly fascinated by the use of colored leather as a finishing for the door-openings.

Wrap-up on Arpaz Beyler

The Arpaz Beyler mansion and tower look deserted, but one of the rooms of the mansion is still inhabited, and the lands surrounding the property are used as farmland. In 2019 the Arpaz family agreed to donate the estate to the Nazilli Municipality under the condition that the tower and mansion would be restored and get a museum status. If done right, these restoration works will, without a doubt, restore this magnificent estate to its former glory. For now, if you want to visit, do not just walk around without asking. The couple living on-site is very welcoming and happy to show you around this amazing property.

Even in its current state, the building is well worth your time, especially if you have a weak spot for derelict buildings and urbex-style locations. The scheduled restoration works should have started, but at the time of our visit, there were no signs of that. When speaking to the people living there, they could not confirm if and when works would start. We will, however, update this post if we hear anything!

We stayed at Nysa Hotel when visiting the area. While it doesn’t always get raving reviews, we were very pleased with our room. It seems that the management has listened to the feedback and the hotel has gotten an upgrade, or at least the room where we stayed had. The hotel is in a quiet area, with a restaurant on-site, and the rooms are comfortable and budget-friendly.

We still love to use Booking.com when searching for the perfect hotel or vacation rental in Turkey. Unfortunately, the website isn’t accessible from within Turkey without the use of a VPN. If you don’t have a VPN, and you’re already in Turkey, Hotels.com is a good alternative.
