Andriake: one of the fun things to do in Kalkan

Is Andriake in Kalkan, you may ask? No, it is not. But it is quite nearby and even closer to Kaş. But most importantly, it is a great place to visit with kids, and therefore one of the fun things to do in Kalkan. Here’s why kids will experience Andriake as a fun ancient site with a lifelike staging of the old harbor area.

Why is Andriake a fabulous choice for kids?

The great thing about this site that is not too stretched out in its current state. Together with the walking paths, bird-observation terraces, and the lifelike staging of the old harbor area, including the 16m Roman-era boat, it makes it accessible for children. They get a real sense of how things were and are fascinated by the objects depicting history. Andriake was an important port for the Lycian Union and the harbor of ancient Myra, situated at the mouth of the ancient river Andrakos and dating back to the 3rd century BC. Over time, it became the base of the Lycian fleet, and it was also the port where apostle Paul and his entourage changed ships on their way to Rome. To further develop the grain trade which had become important, a 6.000m3 granary or granarium was built. It has seven rooms, is 56m long and 32m wide, and is the largest structure at the site. It was carefully restored to house the Museum of Lycian Civilizations. Andriake lost its position as an important grain trading center when the silting of the port began. Among the remains visible today you will find the granary, of course, but also trade areas and harbor structures, a Roman bath, a synagogue and churches, and some monuments. One of the more fascinating places in Andriake is probably the 24-meter long, 12-meter wide and six-meter deep cistern. So make sure not to miss it during your visit!

How to get to Andriake?

The site is located a few kilometers from Demre and its Saint Nicholas Church which is about 50km east of Kaş and approximately 80km southwest of Çıralı and Olympos. You’ll find it on our map together with a map search function for more Turkey travel inspiration. From the current small harbor where the shipyard is, you can take a boat trip to the sunken city of Kekova to complete your day out.

Turkey is a perfectly safe country to travel, except for these risks. Still, you should never travel without proper insurance. We love World Nomads’ travel insurance. We love their philosophy and their take on responsible travel, but also the fact that they cover popular activities in Turkey such as paragliding or balloon rides.

Demre may not be the most fascinating place to stay for the night. We would suggest an overnight stay in nearby Kaş, Kekova, or Olympos. We really enjoyed our stay at Lukkies Lodge!

You’ll find more hotel options near Myra on Booking.com. Unfortunately, the website isn’t accessible from within Turkey without the use of a VPN. If you don’t have a VPN, and you’re already in Turkey, Hotels.com is a good alternative.

When searching for flights, we like to use Skyscanner. It’s easy to use, and reliable. Find the best flights to Turkey and domestic flights that will take you all around the country here.

Do you prefer some good old road tripping? Once you get used to the unconventional driving style in Turkey, you’ll love to hit the road. After all, it’s all about the journey, and you may expect some very scenic rides! Renting a car in Turkey is easy. If you’re looking for an established car rental company that allows pick-up and drop-off at different airports, check out Europcar. They have offices all over Turkey.
